Zorb

by Administrator published on Feb 01, 2010

Description

Several public administrations in Spain are sponsoring the development of Zorb, an open source extension to Nagios, an open source network monitoring tool. Zorb allows users to fine-tune the processing of events generated from the monitored instances (hosts and services). Zorb has just been published on the OSOR Forge. The development of Zorb is made possible with the help, of Cenatic, the Spanish government\'s resource centre on open source and open standards, the government of Tenerife and the public administration of the city of Benicasim. The public administrations hope that Zorb will help to improve the way Nagios can handle its alerts. Using Zorb means users can split event destinations. This should make it possible, for instance, to improve log management without needing the default Nagios log. Another aim is to improve the distribution and processing of events, for instance by using encryption or developing load balancing systems. A third proposed feature is to allow storage in LDAP directory servers as well as in the Nagios default, a MySQL database server.

Features

Some of the planned Zorb features are: · Detailed NDOMod API documentation as base · Data destination based on event type · Possible destinations: file, pipe, socket · More than one destination by event · Default destination available

Future plans

Zorb is the base for a improved Nagios event handling processing. By splitting event destinations features like these become possible: · Improved log management without needing the standard Nagios log logic · Improvements in distributed model performing secure, backed, encrypted scanner-central repository communications · Improvements in system storage, allowing for instance using LDAP as database instead or MySQL

Get Involved

Zorb becomes the base for a revolution in Nagios event processing, exposing it to the community in the easiest imaginable way. If you want to participate we need help, any contribution will be very appreciated.
