EU: Close to a hundred European groups join Software Freedom Day
Close to a hundred European Open Source software organisations are participating in the next Software Freedom Day, held this Saturday September 20.
Joining the annual day to demonstrate and share Open Source are groups from all over the EU, like the Organization for digital freedom in Iceland (Markmið Félags um stafrænt frelsi á Ísland)and the Enna Open Source Team (Team Ennese Software Libero) in Enna, a city on the Italian island of Sicily.
In Mappano di Caselle, another city in Italy, a group of Open Source enthusiasts is organising an event lasting the entire weekend. On Saturday for example the group has lined-up presentations and introductions targeted especially at schools. The event website mentions among others a presentation by Sophia Danesino on the use of Open Source at the institute where she teaches, the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale Guiseppe Peano in Turin.
In Dundee, Scotland, the Abertay Linux Society and the Hannah Maclure Centre are planning a day of discussions and presentations. They will also show the Open Source movies 'Big Buck Bunny' and 'Elephants Dream', both made with Blender, Open Source 3D graphics software.
"There will be a light yet free lunch served before the screening of the films, the event is free for everyone and open between 10am and 4pm," the organisers write on their event website.
Blogging
In the French city of Rouen, the Novell Users International, the Linux User Group and the Free Software User Group have joined together, organising a day of presentations on several categories of Open Source applications such as software for blogging, for managing web site, for and for e-commerce.In Gent, a city in Belgium, Open Source enthusiasts announce that they will be handing out CDs with Open Source software to the public in the city's shopping district.
Most of the groups participating can be found using the general website, softwarefreedomday.org. A world map can be used to select those events close by. Groups wishing to join in can announce their own events on the site.
