PT: University to offer open source software master

by Gijs Hillenius published on Jun 22, 2009

The Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE-IUL) is to offer a one-year master course on open source software, starting in September.

The Master in Open Source Software, Mestrado em Open Source Software, MOSS, will combine courses in computer science, economics and law. "The focus will be on recognised open source technologies such as GNU/Linux, PHP and Content Management Systems."

Between 21 September 2009 and 31 July 2010, the university is offering  classes including 'Fundamentals of open source operating systems', 'Introduction into development of open source software', and a course on 'Business Models and Economic Issues of Open Source Software'.

The master is meant for students who want to specialise in open
source software. According to the MOSS website, the master is also targeting part-time students. "It is possible to combine the course with professional activities or students living outside of Lisbon."

Professors and teachers include people active in Portugal's open source community. For instance, one of the teachers is Paulo Trezentos, who founded Caixa Mágica Software, an open source company involved in dissemination of specialised laptops containing both a proprietary and the GNU/Linux operating system to 500,000 Portuguese school children aged between six and nine.

Another teacher is Carlos Serrão, assistant professor at the Lisbon University Institute and head of the Portuguese chapter of the Open Web Applications Security Project, and organisation focusing on improving the safety of Internet applications and services.

The master is recognised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and will upon successful completion provide students with a  master degree, according to the MOSS website. It's organised in cooperation with the Open University of Catalonia, which has been offering a similar master course for the past few years.

Tuition fee for the master course is 4000 euro. Students can register until 18 September.
