PL: Interior ministry supports open source group's procurement project

by Gijs Hillenius published on Dec 11, 2009

The undersecretary of Poland's Interior Ministry, Witold Drożdż on 2 December became the honorary patron of a project on 'sound and transparent procurement tools', an information campaign by the Polish Foundation on Open and Free Software (Fwioo).

Their procurement project started in October and will run for one year. The group aims to do research into public procurement of IT, monitor procurement cases and disseminate information about procurement practises.

In a letter to FWioo, Witold Drożdż complimented the project, the advocacy group said in a statement. The undersecretary writes that the initiative, "aimed at extending and gaining expertise, will offer help in the properly and transparently procuring of software and software tools, is valuable and worthy of our support."

Drożdż recommends that the group includes a nationwide examination of aspects of the use of and demand for IT solutions in Poland's public administrations.

Fwioo was founded in 2007. The advocacy group has since organised several campaigns to promote the use of free and open source software. Last year it's volunteers visited 99 schools in 43 villages and cities, introducing the staff, teachers and pupils to this type of software. The group also tries to gather information on public administrations that work with or are tyring out the use of open source.
