The Centre of Information Technologies of Education (ITC), part of the Lithuanian ministry of Education, is supporting schools using Baltix GNU/Linux, an Open Source distribution derived from Ubuntu and Debian.

The city council of Vilnius will not run new trials for an Open Source desktop, after failed tests in 2003. However, the city is increasing its use of Open Source for back end IT systems.

Open Document Format (ODF), the ISO approved standard for electronic office documents, was made a Lithuanian standard on July 31. The Lithuanian Standards Board recently published the ODF decision on its website.
