FI: Open Source resource centre joins Linux foundation working group
Finnish Centre for Open Source Solutions (COSS) this month became an associate partner of Fossbazaar, a working group of the Linux Foundation. The centre expects that joining this community will benefit its open source activities.
The Fossbazaar organisation is spearheaded by IT company HP. Other founding members are the Linux Foundation, Google, Novell and SourceForge. The group wants to share case studies on the use of open source, discuss policy development on this type of software and to share information on tools and resources that help implementing it.
COSS is the first national open source resource centre joining this group. In an introduction on the non profit's website, Open source specialist Matti Saastamoinen of COSS writes: "Together we can achieve better results than working alone."
The Finish open source resource centre organises several events and workshops to promote the use of open source, such as the annual Openmind conference in the city of Tampere, and the programming contest Summer Code Finland.
COSS started in 2003 as an open source development agency. It is part of the Technology Centre Hermia, and has more than 140 members including IT companies and research institutes. "Most of our members are small and medium sized businesses", says Saastamoinen. However, the list also includes companies such as Nokia, IBM, HP and SUN Micrososystems. "And all major Finnish universities are part of our member network."
