OSI visits the Commission
The Open Source Initiative held its Board meeting in Brussels (from 6 to 7th February 2009) and visited the European Commission.
The OSI board, chaired by Michael Thiemann, was welcomed by Karel de Vriendt, the head of the IDABC Unit. This meeting was a unique opportunity for OSI to gain a better understanding of the European Commission policy in promoting interoperable solutions and (in particular) in encouraging public administrations to share and re-distribute their own produced software under the provision of open source licences. The OSOR (Open Source Observatory and Repository) and the EUPL (the European Union Public Licence) are two initiatives that OSI has found extremely interesting. During the FOSSDEM conference of 7 february, Michael Thiemann reported: "OSOR is the best combination of documentation about open source software in public administrations in the world", he said.
OSI board representatives visiting the European Commission were:
- Michael Tiemann - President
- Danese Cooper - Executive Director
- Russell Nelson - Vice President
- Bruno Souza - Southern America
- Martin Michlmayr - Europe
- Alolita Sharma - Asia
- Nnenna Nwakanma - Africa
- Rishab Aiyer Ghosh – Europe
